ACT-SO
COMMITTEE

Purpose of ACT-SO Committee
The ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological & Scientific Olympics) is a nationally recognized, year-long youth enrichment program of the NAACP that celebrates academic and artistic excellence among African American high school students (grades 9–12). Led locally by the NAACP Cleveland Branch, the program connects students with mentors and coaches who help them develop their talents, confidence, and leadership skills.
Students compete in 25 categories across the sciences, humanities, business, and the performing and visual arts. Local competitions take place each spring, with gold medalists advancing to the National ACT-SO Competition held during the NAACP National Convention, where students can earn scholarships and prizes totaling over $300,000.
Since its inception, more than 260,000 students nationwide have participated in ACT-SO. The Cleveland program highlights a year of dedication, creativity, and growth—opening doors to national recognition and future opportunities.
